As some of you may or may not know, I tend to politically lean towards heavily modified version libertarianism. Politically, I like the idea of providing everyone with a fair playing ground in the sense of free lower, upper, and vocational education, single payer healthcare, and strictly enforced simple tax laws that ensure that the people pay what they owe, rather than taking advantage of tax shelters and increasing the burden on "the little guy." After those basic needs are met, I like the idea of letting everyone duke it out economically within a certain level of reason for the sake of humanitarian concerns, to encourage entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking.
Essentially I want to teach people to fish, ensure that there is an ecosystem for them to fish in, but not give anyone fish. Free fishing classes for all, free fish for none.
My viewpoint has rarely been popular with my fellow sociology students, my social peers, or popular society as a whole. However, it seems that recently I have been hearing of a few scholars who are starting to adopt viewpoints somewhat parallel to mine. For example, I recently read this interesting article on aid to the African continent. Within it, a Kenyan economist pleads “For God’s sake, Please stop the Aid!”He elaborates that he believes that the money poured into the African governments by western powers is doing little more than funding bureaucracies, corruption, and stagnation.
I could go ahead and continue to poorly summarize the article, however I think I will let you read it yourself and see what you think.

I agree with your viewpoint quite a bit, and I like your analogy of free fishing classes. There are charities that work towards providing families in Mexico with a small tortilla business, or giving livestock to poor families in Africa so they can live off of the milk/eggs/honey/labor/etc. Sendacow.com even has a Chinese herb that can be grown in Africa that treats malaria.
